Chapter Fifteen

Jema waited at the bottom of the stairs, dressed in a sports bra and baggy sweats that had to be rolled a couple of times at the waist to fit snugly on the hips.

“Guess you’re waiting on me?” Skye asked, not hiding the fact that she wasn’t ready for this part. She dreaded this part the most. Well, besides the killing demons part.

“I am. You might wanna change. I’ll be out back,” Jema said, heading for the back door, two cold, sweaty, water bottles in tow. It only took a few minutes to change and join Jema on the back porch. Skye was going to finally see what was in the guesthouse, but she did wonder why they would be working out there instead of just using the backyard.

As the door swung open to the guesthouse, she saw her own reflection staring back at her from across the room. It was a wall of mirrors in a large, open room. Dark wood floors lightly creaked underfoot as they walked in. After she stopped noticing her reflection, she saw what else was being reflected, a wall of weapons. She moved forward so she could turn and take in exactly what she was seeing. Daggers of all sizes, jeweled hilts, bamboo fighting sticks, machetes with silver script inlaid in the blades. Everything had silver blades, and everything was perfectly hung. At the very end of the room there sat a long brown couch with words painted on the wall above it.

“To protect, to heal, to love, to live, in the light,” Skye read aloud.

“Not what you thought?”

“Honestly, I didn’t know what you guys were hiding in here. Maybe a bed and a kitchenette. But definitely not this.”

Jema sat the water in a corner. “You ready?”

“No...”

“Your mom said you were a black belt or something, right?”

“Was. I don’t practice anymore. It’s just not who I am right now.”

“Come on, we’ll start out slow.”

Stepping in front of Skye, Jema raised her hands in front of her face in a blocking stance. But Skye stood with her arms folded. When Jema saw she wasn’t going to participate, she pulled Skye’s arms apart and moved them in front of her face. Skye kept them there, but she didn’t move. Jema returned to her own blocking stance. She swiped across Skye’s face, fully prepared to miss her, just in case her cousin refused to move and took the hit. But with cat-like reflexes she dodged the hit, so Jema came across with the other arm immediately. Which was dodged as well.

“I’m not going to fight you Jema.”

“You have to Skye.” This time Skye caught Jema’s hand as she went for her side. “Fight me, come on.”

“I can’t.”

Jema was frustrated, to say the least. “What are you gonna do if another demon attacks you?”

“I don’t know,” Skye said, the sides of her mouth down-turned.

Jema rubbed the back of her neck, trying to figure out how to handle this. Most Souls can’t wait to learn to fight, even if they hate the idea of killing.
